Your friendly Dorset chimney sweep, asking for a little support.

Hello,
Jim Chim-in-ey here.
Your friendly chimney sweep, asking for a little support.

Many of you know me as your friendly chimney sweep by day, but by night I supliment my income by DJing across a few small pubs in the area, all of which have had the rugs pulled from under them.

Due to COVID-19 both my chimney sweep business has rapidly slowed and my DJ work has been wiped out.
This is a polite request to help this sole trader survive the storm.
_________
How can you help?

Bournemouth Chimney Sweep visits the most magical place in Dorset

Bournemouth Chimney Sweep Jim Chim-in-ey gets to visit some super amazing places on his sweeping travels around Dorset.

One of the highlights of the year is his annual chimney sweep visit to the magical Sculpture by the Lake in Dorchester.

What is sculpture by the lake?
Surrounded by 26 acres of Dorset countryside Sculpture by the Lakes is an idyllic hub for art lovers and collectors that has been crafted by renowned sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wonderful wife, Monique.

The Dorset Chimney Sweep's Video from Sculpture by the Lake

Here is a fun little video of Jim Chim-in-ey's trailer ride by Sam who is one of the friendliest and helpful grounds keepers you'll meet 😊

This is an exciting ride between the The Island and the River Keepers Hut which both can be hired out for the day. If you fancy having your own private area with a woodburner installed to keep you cozy as you take in the views relaxing by the lake visit - https://www.sculpturebythelakes.co.uk/hire

In total I sweep six woodburners with two of the stoves in their Gallery Cafe which exhibits some of Simon's smaller pieces of art. This is a great place to grab yourself a cuppa and a cheeky homemade cake while enjoying the warmth of a wood fire.

It's worth mentioning that all the staff I met on my travels at Sculpture by the lake were absolutely wonderful, making my visit an enjoyable one. It's great to be invited to sweep for such a warm and welcoming team.

Dorset Chimney Sweep Rescues Bird from Chimney

💀🐦 Bird saved from horrible death: This fella got himself stuck at the bottom of a bricked up fireplace and the pigeon was too big to squeeze through the fires throat. He was gently offered a lift to the top of the chimney stack on a modified brush with a sponge platform, CCTV and a lot of patience. After a little rest on the chimney pot and a big shake off to remove the soot and dust. He flew away safe and sound thanks to the customers quick reactions to call in a chimney sweep. ⏳🔥🎩

Chimney Sweeping - Dorset BBC Radio Solent live with Jim Chim-in-ey

If you missed Jim Chim-in-ey talking about being a Dorset chimney sweep live at 7:50am on BBC Radio Solent.
You can watch the video below.

Talking to our Dorset life guest today and well Jim the Dorset Chimney Sweep is on the phone to talk to us.

Intro
Jim good morning I need your sign up on something, I want to do something a little bit cheesy, I guess this happens all the time whenever anybody talks about your life and stuff. Can i play Chim Chim-in-ey [Music] Dorset life time, I think it's only fair when you get a chimney-sweep on the show to play you know this from Mary Poppins and Dorset Life's guest today is who you've heard from it's Jim Chim-in-ey not his real name, after having had the nickname JC for years when this 31 year old took over a chimney sweeping business three years ago it seemed fitting for him to change his name. Jim lovely to have you on.

Give me some give me a check on hows things are in the chimney sweeping world in the 21st century?
Yeah it's going really well the wood burners has really helped thanks to the fashion of wood burners coming into homes has really helped to keep the business alive.

Your young, your 31 so how does one become a chimney sweep when they're in their late twenties?
I inherited the business from a feller named James and he is a family friend in my auntie, that is the person who knows knows the friend and she convinced me to go on a few jobs with him and I went went on a few jobs and I loved it.

What was he was the appeal? What did you what did you fall in love with quite so quickly?
Well I really liked the social side I love popping to people's houses and  having a chat and getting to know lots of interesting people.

When the James who was running the business before you Jim Chim-in-ey took over, did he pass the business on with any kind of a warning because I guess it's very easy from the outside to assume that chimney sweeping has quieten down over recent years.
He said there was just enough work out there just to tick on by and which was quite nice and I looked at the accounts and it turned out pretty good for myself so it's just just enough to survive which is what I wanted.

Is the job any different from what it would have been a hundred years ago? I guess you're not sending you know seven-year-olds up the chimney anymore but presumably its back breaking hard work is there any labor-saving devices?
The biggest things happened in the chimney sweeping world is something called power sweeping which is attaching special chimney sweeping rods to drill and that's spinning for you so that when you get stuck on a bend and things like that it works a lot better. When I first started it was manual sweeping then ,you end up with a beach body in the winter, and you lose it just in-time for when the summer season hits. So power sweeping has definitely helped.

That's definitely interesting, we live in a house that is central heating but where my folks live in South Wales, my dad who's sixty nine now, he will still sweep the chimney and it's one of those jobs whenever he does it just the old-fashioned manual way then he'll come out with the creek in his neck and a sore back and I say why? Just get somebody in to do it
There is a lot more to it then you think, its about getting the rod sizes correct and making sure you get in a good clean, that is what we do.

You touched on there Jim that obviously the busy time it is ridiculous we're talking to a chimney sweep on a day like today, looking out my window blue skies and sunshine. Does anyone get there chimney swept in the summer is there any sense in that?
A few people do, but most people wait until September or February those are sort of our peak times either at the beginning of the season or at the end. If I swept it  mid summer and the customer is unfortunate enough to get a bird's nest afterwards, they would have to get it swept again to get rid of the nest before September, so a lot of people get its swept after the bird season.

So a bit quieter now, a chance you to take a break before things step up again, although there's every chance over the summer you might get a a wedding booking tell me a bit about this . . . you've had three over three years?
Sweeps are famous for being being lucky, basically we saved king George II and he decreed and said that chimney sweeps we're lucky and he invited as sweep to his daughter's wedding and I'm from then we get invited. It was  our parents sort of era and their parents were the ones who bought us for the wedding and we turn up and we crash the wedding, steal the kiss from the bride and things like that.

How often have you done that?
I've done three of them so whats that. . . about once a year I get probably two phone calls.T

These aren't people that you know? You're just turning up to strangers weddings?
I found out about it because people were ringing me up asking if I do chimney sweep weddings in Dorset

Well there you go. Jim Chim-in-ey available to sweep chimneys and turn up at weddings.
Before we let you disappear is it is it true that you once swept sweeps chimney? Sweep of Sooty and sweep?
Yeah the property of John the puppeteer of Sooty & Sweep and I went in his house and the house is full of Sooty and Sweep and he was kind enough to let me take a photo.

Sooty and Sweep Dorset Chimney Sweep Jim Chim-in-ey 01
Sooty and Sweep Dorset Chimney Sweep Jim Chim-in-ey

Who knew that chimney sweeps were good luck for weddings there you go um I do know we will check back in with Dorset lives on Monday morning about same time BBC radio Solent.

Thank you to Steve Harris & the BBC Radio Solent Team and to John Seaton for the Sooty and Sweep photo opportunity.

Do you miss sweeps or forget to book in your chimney sweep

Never miss a chimney sweep again with the "Free Reminder Service" from Jim Chim-in-ey.

Regular maintenance to keep your home in smooth working order can be a bit of a bit of a choir and with so many appliances and services to keep on top of its easy to see how you might forget to get your chimney swept.

Why is missing one or two chimney sweeps an issue?

Missing a sweep may void your home insurance in the event of a chimney fire or soot fall. Your chimney sweep also recommends a safe sweeping interval based on your burning habits, soot quality and other variables. Missing that date could head into chimney fire territory.

How often should your open fire be swept by a chimney sweep?

how often should i sweep my open fire
Open fires should be swept at least once a year - Jim Chimney - Dorset's Chimney Sweep Specialist

'Most of my customers chimneys are swept around once or twice a year,'

After every sweep a recommended date for the next sweep will be issued with the sweep certificate.
This date takes into account the quality of the soot, the amount of soot, the condition of the liner and the appliance condition.

As your chimney sweep I will be able to recommend how often you should be sweeping your chimney after inspecting your chimney, fuel and soot.

For a general guide on sweeping frequencies please read on. . .

Open fires - burning Wood

Low users - If you are burning good quality seasoned wood, your chimney is in good working order and are only burning around once a week during the winter, then your chimney should usually be swept around once a year.

For higher users or burners of wet wood, (which is never recommend) a quarterly sweep is recommended.

Open fires - burning Smokeless Fuel / Clean Coal

At least once per year

Open fires - burning Bitumous Coal / House Coal

Low users - If you are burning house coal, your chimney is in good working order and are only burning around once a week during the winter, then your chimney should usually be swept around once a year.

For higher users of house coal quarterly sweep is recommended.

Check your Insurance policy

It is also worth checking with your insurance policy what the recommended sweep frequency is. This is because some company have different expectations and some insurance company's will not pay out for a chimney fire or soot fall if their recommended sweep frequency has not been met.

Why is it so important to protect wild birds?

Dorset Chimney Bird Nest Guide: Article Four

I met up with professional Ecologist, Edward Parrott to find out why it is so important to not disturb wild bird nests in season.

wild bird protect dorset chimney sweep

“Many birds within the UK have suffered dramatic population declines in recent decades. This has been for numerous reasons including loss of habitat, restriction in food supply, and even direct persecution by people. Finding a suitable site, collecting materials and building a nest, attracting a mate, laying eggs, incubating the eggs and feeding and defending chicks from predators takes an enormous amount of time and energy for bird. They’re at their most vulnerable when they’re on their nest and it’s really important that they are not disturbed so that they can complete their life cycle.”

The best way to store your firewood!

hashtag pattern fire wood stack 2The best way to stack, if you have the space is to layer your wood in a #hashtag pattern.

honeycomb pattern fire wood stack 2

If you have less free space, another acceptable option is to stack your wood piles in a honeycomb pattern. Make sure this is no more than two layers in-depth as the wood can struggle to dry.

A shelter with a raised baton floor is a great way to help keep the rain off and ensure air can still circulate the stack.

If using a tarpaulin, make sure your not suffocating the wood as it's important that air has the freedom to flow.

If your wood is struggling to dry, you can try chopping your logs into smaller pieces to encourage them to dry at a faster speed.

If the wood is green, unseasoned and wet, she will need more time for the air to flow around to help dry the logs out.

How long does it take to season wood?

Harder wood such as oak can take up to 4 years to be fully seasoned.
Softer wood can take between 12 -18 months to season.
