I still need the birds nest removed during the bird season?

Being a bird lover, Jim does not facilitate the removal of nests in season and would always recommend waiting until August/ September.

If the removal of the nest must be completed during the bird nesting season, then a breeding bird survey must be carried out by a professional and their advice taken prior to any work commencing.

Breaking the Countryside Act 1981 will result in a fine of up to £5000.00 or up to 6 months in prison.

Reduce woodburner air pollution with education, support the BurnRight campaign!

Jim Chim-in-ey is supporting the @BurnRightUK campaign to reduce air pollution with education.

If you own a woodburner or fire? You can learn how to save money, burn more efficiently and reduce your carbon emissions by visiting -  BurnRight.co.uk

Burn Right Campaign Logo

Jim Chim-in-ey, of Bournemouth, Dorset has signed up to the Burn Right campaign.

It was created by chimney sweeps and professionals in the solid fuel industry in an effort to educate people on how to use their woodburners and multi fuel stoves correctly.

If not properly operated, woodburners and stoves can not only pollute the atmosphere, but also pose a risk of chimney fires, life and property.

“The main problem is that wood is often not burned at a high enough temperature. If it’s not hot enough then unburned fuel travels up as a vapour and out of the chimney causing unnecessary pollution.

“There is a real lack of customer awareness with some of these issues and most people who use a woodburning stove don’t even know there is a problem, let alone think that they might be a part of it.

“The design of the stove and the moisture content of the wood are two factors that affect the burning temperature but the most important thing is the way the user controls the air supply to the stove. Basically, if the air supply is closed off too much, the wood can’t burn hot enough. Closing the air off too much does not save fuel, it wastes fuel!”

“Burn Right seeks to help people who use stoves to get it right and make a difference to the air quality where they live. Not only is this good news for the environment, but users will save money, their chimney will be cleaner - and therefore safer - and the chimney and the stove will last longer too.

“The campaign is being spearheaded by professional chimney sweeps across the country, and I’m pleased to be one of them. We have a unique perspective of the stove, the fuel, the chimney and the customers burning habits and can advise accordingly.”

For a full guide, go to the BurnRight website - complete with video demonstrations which explain everything. “Get it Right” at: www.BurnRight.co.uk

How to light your fire when it is cold or smoking

A chimney sweeps guide on how to light your fire when it is cold!

light your fire when it is cold or smoking
Light your fire when it is cold or smoking

This can happen when you get a cold chimney flue and the cold air blocks the hot air, this prevents the hot smoke from leaving the chimney and the only root for the smoke is back into the room.

Try this quick fix to push out the cold plug out of the chimney.

Try preheat your flue before lighting the fire. This can be done by using a smokeless form of heat to create an updraught for the smoke to follow when you light your fire.

Below is 5 common methods to pre-heat your chimney when it's cold.

1) Electric heater aimed up the flue for 10+ minutes.
2) ‎Blowtorch for 5+ minutes.
3) ‎Bundle of Firelighters lit on there own.
4) ‎Hair dryer for 5+ minutes.
5) ‎Camping stove for 5+ minutes.

If pre-heating does not resolve your problem, you may have a blockage or fault and you should seek advice from a Professional Chimney Sweep.

If you are based in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch or Dorset.
