Q&A with your local Dorset chimney sweep specialist Jim Chim-in-ey.

Why should I have my chimney swept?

Sweeping helps prevent chimney fires by removing soot, bird nests, cobwebs & creosote. It also ensures a clear passage for dangerous gasses to escape.

How often does my chimney need sweeping?

Fuel, soot quality & quantity all affect the amount of sweeps required.
As a general rule . . . Smokeless fuel: Once a year, Wood & Coal: Quarterly when in use.

How messy is sweeping my chimney?

There is no mess! The opening is sealed off with the surrounding area protected with double tight knit sheets. I also use a professional HEPA Filter Vacuum that has a 99.997% filtration efficiency rating.

How long does a sweep take?

A usual sweep can take between one and two hours.

What area do you cover?

I cover all of Dorset. Including Bournemouth, Poole, Ferndown, Blanford Forum, Wimborne and Salisbury.

How much is a sweep?

£47.00 per sweep
£42.50 per sweep for two or more appliances in the same property.
£42.50 per sweep when you share your booking with a neighbor in the same postcode.

Best Wishes

The most efficient way to burn your firewood!

An efficient way to burn your wood is buy doing what is known as a Top Down Burn.

Wood likes to burn from the top down, so by stacking your logs in a #hastag pyramid pattern, you are encouraging the wood to burn efficiently. This cleaner burn encourages the gasses to run through the fire before they enter the flue and over time this will reduce the amount of creosote that settles in your chimney.

top down burn - chimney sweep advice 2

  1. Start with your largest two logs on the bottom.
  2. Then place two smaller logs on top in the opposite direction. This should look like a #hashtag
  3. Jenger up using smaller pieces of wood on each layer until you end up with your kinderlin at the top of the stack.
  4. Use natural fire lighters to start the burn.
  5. Enjoy your efficient clean burning fire.

Top Tip: Only burn seasoned wood in your fire or woodburner!
